The Hershey Bears: A Sweet Tradition on Ice
Hockey fans across Pennsylvania and beyond have come to adore the Hershey Bears, a franchise steeped in tradition and success — most recently as the 2023 Calder Cup champions. The Bears have been a prominent fixture in the American Hockey League (AHL) for nearly a century, delighting fans with thrilling on-ice action and endearing community involvement. If you're looking for something a little different to do during your stay at the Londonderry Inn and Estate that will have you on the edge of your seat, then grab tickets to a hockey game. The Bears' home ice is at The Giant Center Arena, just 15 minutes from our historic inn.
The Hershey Bears' journey began in 1932 when chocolatier Milton Hershey brought ice hockey here to entertain his chocolate factory workers. Back then, the team was called the Hershey B'ars. Four years later, they became the Bears. (The name change was in part due to ridicule from sports writers who said the B’ars was not an imposing nickname.) Since then, they've become one of the AHL's most storied franchises, boasting 12 Calder Cup championships — more than any other team. They won their first cup in 1947, and their latest trophy just last season. These championships are a testament to the club's commitment to excellence and a source of immense pride for their dedicated fan base.
Throughout their tenure, the Bears have had nine NHL parent teams. Since 2005, they've served as the primary development club for the Washington Capitals. Hershey has been a springboard for hundreds of careers in hockey, for both players and coaches. The Capitals’ Stanley Cup title in 2018 featured 14 players who suited up for the Bears. Over the years, the Bears have played a pivotal role in the development of many prominent players, including recently retired winger Chris Bourque and modern-day NHL standouts like goalie Braden Holtby and defenseman John Carlson. This emphasis on player development has solidified Hershey's reputation as a breeding ground for future NHL hockey talent.
The Bears have become part of the fabric of the community in Hershey. The team enjoys unwavering support from a passionate and dedicated fan base. In turn, the hockey club gives back to the community by actively engaging in charitable initiatives, events and community outreach programs. Probably their most well-known charity event is their gigantic Teddy Bear Toss, the first one held more than 20 years ago. At a home game, usually in January, fans toss teddy bears onto the ice when the Bears score their first goal of the game. All of the stuffed animals are scooped off the ice and donated to local hospitals and charities. Last season, they collected 67,309 stuffed animals to donate — a world record! This season's Teddy Bear Toss is set for Jan. 7, 2024.
The Hershey Bears represent the epitome of what a minor league hockey franchise can achieve. Their rich history, commitment to player development, passionate fan base and active involvement in the community all combine to create a remarkable legacy. Take in a game and be a part of the excitement during your next getaway to the Londonderry Inn and Estate. "Every day is a great day for hockey!"
