The trail itself has a fascinating history. Once the tracks of two local railroads—The Cornwall & Lebanon Railroad and The Cornwall Railroad—it has been transformed into a 20-mile mixed-use greenway. These railroads were originally built to support the Cornwall Iron Ore Mines, transporting iron ore and by-products to nearby furnaces and processing mills. Now, this historic corridor is repurposed for outdoor enthusiasts, thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteers who maintain the trail year-round.
The Lebanon Valley Rail-Trail stretches from downtown Lebanon, winding through picturesque communities like South Lebanon, Cornwall, Mt. Gretna, Colebrook, and Lawn, and connecting to the Conewago Trail and Swatara State Park. Along the way, you’ll encounter untouched woodlands, state game lands, and expansive views of local fields and farms. Whether you're hiking, biking, or running, the trail provides a peaceful escape from the everyday hustle.
Our guests at the Londonderry Inn and Estate can access the Lebanon Valley Rail-Trail nearby. The Lawn Trailhead, the Colebrooke Trailhead, and the Mt. Gretna Spur Trailhead are all just about 5 miles away from the inn, making it easy to hop on the trail for a quick outing. A spur trail between mileposts 6 and 7 connects to the charming community of Mt. Gretna. As you walk through the former grounds of the old Mt. Gretna Amusement Park, you’ll find yourself in the heart of Mt. Gretna, where you can stop by the famous Jigger Shop for a treat.
One of the many highlights of the trail is the Union Canal Tunnel Park, where you can take a narrated canal tour or a guided kayaking tour. On the trail you’ll also pass by the Cornwall Furnace National Historic Site, giving you a unique opportunity to explore the social and industrial history of the area while enjoying the great outdoors. Though most of the trail is unpaved and covered in packed gravel, a four-mile section in Lebanon is paved, making it more accessible for casual riders and walkers.
